{"id":40657,"date":"2024-02-29T16:47:22","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T16:47:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/miamifoundation.org\/?p=38857"},"modified":"2025-06-20T14:18:27","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T14:18:27","slug":"black-history-month-magnolia-birthing-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/miamifoundation.org\/blog\/black-history-month-magnolia-birthing-house\/","title":{"rendered":"BLACK HISTORY MONTH:\u00a0MAGNOLIA BIRTHING HOUSE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of our celebration of Black History Month, we\u00a0seek\u00a0to elevate the stories of Black entrepreneurs and nonprofit leaders whose work is a testament to the resilience, passion, and impact of the Black community in Miami.<\/p>\n<p>We\u00a0are thrilled\u00a0to introduce you to\u00a0Tamara Taitt, who leads\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnoliabirthhouse.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Magnolia Birth House<\/a>, a nonprofit\u00a0located\u00a0in\u00a0North Miami. Magnolia Birth House\u00a0is the first and only community-founded natural birthing center women\u2019s health organization in South Florida.\u00a0This year, The Miami Foundation\u00a0awarded\u00a0Magnolia Birth House\u00a0with an Open\u00a0For\u00a0Business technology grant to\u00a0purchase\u00a0equipment that allowed them to\u00a0improve patient\u00a0care using the latest technology.\u00a0In two years, we have\u00a0had the honor of awarding\u00a0nearly $900,000\u00a0to 65 nonprofits\u00a0and $1.5 million to 166 businesses.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-41352 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/miamifoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Tamara-Taitt.jpg\" alt=\"Tamara Taitt\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/miamifoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Tamara-Taitt.jpg 683w, https:\/\/miamifoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Tamara-Taitt-100x150.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brenda Morrison, Open\u00a0For\u00a0Business Associate:\u00a0In what ways has your business\/nonprofit contributed to the cultural and economic vibrancy of the local Black community in Miami?\u00a0Share a few words about the creation of your business or non-profit if it provides context on how it has contributed to the\u00a0cultural and economic vibrancy of the Black community in\u202fMiami.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tamara Taitt, Founder:<\/strong>\u00a0Long before we opened this\u00a0space\u00a0we had an idea of creating somewhere\u202ffor families that was inclusive and supportive of all parenting choices.<\/p>\n<p>Families with sufficient resources\u00a0have access to a variety of culturally matched services that are supportive and positively\u00a0impact\u00a0their pregnancy outcomes,\u00a0establishing\u00a0a firm launch into parenthood and early life for their newborns. In contrast, persons from low-resourced communities are\u00a0more likely to enter pregnancy with less robust health, receive less prenatal care, and can have experiences during birth and postpartum that require more time and support for recovery.<\/p>\n<p>We believe that families\u00a0are able to\u00a0flourish with the strength and connection\u00a0of a community \u2013 so we created one.\u00a0At our center, we strive to offer support, educational opportunities, and medical services that nurture families so that they can parent the best way they know how and raise healthy, supported, and well-loved children who will, in turn,\u00a0make our world a better place to be in. We created our birth center with the goal that it be a place\u00a0where\u00a0families could receive only the best care.<\/p>\n<p>We knew even a decade ago, the data showed that\u00a0Black women, in particular, were\u00a0at risk for poor outcomes when it came to birth and pregnancy,\u00a0and we also recognize that midwifery care\u00a0has the\u00a0opportunity to\u00a0deliver better outcomes. Our birth center is intentionally\u00a0located\u00a0in a\u00a0Black neighborhood and intentionally serves\u00a0Black families.\u00a0Our company is really a\u00a0reflection of the communities that we serve.\u00a0We invest in and serve with dedication. Ideally, that passion to serve is paired with an idea that is profitable, sustainable, and has a capacity for success.
